Gokyo Chola Island Peak Climbing

Island Peak, 6189m, is one of the most popular climbing peaks in the Everest Region. This trek is popular not only because it has been designed for gradual acclimatization, but because the route passes through places of breath-taking beauty which encourage you along the challenging trail to your destination: the summit of Island Peak. Island Peak is in itself famous for its unsurpassable view of the highest peaks in the world.

This expedition will take you into the heartland of the Khumbu region, passing through Gokyo lake, 4750m, and Everest Base Camp, 5357m. Island Peak is notorious for its highly glaciated West Face that rises from the Lhotse Glacier south of Mount Everest.

The trail to Island Peak, in the shadow of the Everest massif, follows the Dudh Kosi Valley to Namche Bazaar, from where you will see the famous Tengbuche, Khumjung Monasteries and the colorful prayer flags contrasting the colors of nature. After walking beside the moraines of Ngozumpa Glacier you will pass by the turquoise Gokyo Lake, and summit the rocky Gokyo Peak, 5360m, from where we can see four 8000-metre peaks: Everest, 8848m, Lhotse, 8511m, Makalu 8481m, Cho Oyo, 8230m. From Gokyo summit, other towering snow-peaks which fill the horizons are Gyachung Kang, 7922m, Cholatse, 6440m, Taweche, 6542m, Kangchung, 6103m, and countless other rock spires.

The next adventure is the spectacular Cho La pass, 5420m, from where we can get a spectacular view of the entire Khumbu region. As we retreat after Cho La pass, we will get our first sight of Island Peak. Our next climb takes us to the peak of Kala Pattar, 5545m, from where you get the closest view of Mount Everest. After descending to the Imja Valley and on to Chukkung, we make our attempt on Island Peak from where we can see one of the most magnificent views.

For those who want to summit their first Himalayan peak, Gokyo Chola-EBC-Island Peak is the perfect expedition. It is definitely challenging, but the trek has been designed to allow for the needed acclimatization while at the same time, it offers magnificent scenery.
