Island Peak Climbing Nepal
Lobuche Peak Climbing

Kyajo Ri Expedition

Kyajo Ri, 6186m, is shorter, steeper, and more challenging to climb than either Island Peak or Lobuje East, although it is technically easier than Ama Dablam. It requires multiple camps above base camp, rather than being a simple one day ascent to the summit from a high camp like other peaks. If you want a taste of a more challenging mountaineering experience than some of the popular 'trekking' peaks offer, you should consider Kyajo Ri. We have to climb 'Expedition Style' using fixed ropes.

Kyajo Ri Expedition

The Kyajo Ri expedition starts with a flight to Lukla. We trek up the Gokyo valley on a ridgeline north of Namche Bazaar to the Renjo La pass. There are two routes to the Kyajo Ri peak, from Machharmo side and from the Mende side. On the standard route is from the Mende village, which leads up to Kyajo Ri Base Camp, 4500m, in the hidden valley of Kyajo Trangka.

There are two more camps above Base Camp: Camp One, 5300m, and a High Camp, 5700m. From here, the route follows a sinuous snow crest slope of 50 - 55 degrees leading to the pointed summit.

The Government of Nepal only opened Kyajo Ri peak for trekking in 2002. It is listed as a group ‘A’ climbing peak by the Nepal Mountaineering Association

Note I: Our previous experience shows that nine nights and ten days program is sufficient to climb Kyajo Ri. In case you would like to stay more than nine nights and ten days in Base Camp or High Camp, you have to pay USD 210 Per Person / Per day, and you will get all the same services as the scheduled days.
