Pokalde Peak Climbing

Pokalde Peak, or Dolma Ri, 5800m, is one of the shortest and easiest treks in the Everest Region. To reach Pokalde Peak is merely a 650m climb from the base camp; it is an exhilarating uphill climb which requires short sections of scrambling up and over rocks. The final stretch to the summit involves a short section of near vertical scrambling for which amateurs will get a taste of mountaineering, as they will need to be protected by rope.

Since Pokalde Peak offers trekkers a Himalayan peak experience with of superb views from its 5800m summit, without requiring any technical expertise or knowledge of climbing equipment, it is a popular commercial tourist peak in Nepal. Some of the prominent mountains visible from the summit include Makalu, Ama Dablam and Pomarui.

Pokalde Peak Climbing

The rocky Pokalde Peak has very little snow cover during the trekking season. Most ascents of Pokalde Peak nowadays are from the Makalu side of the mountain, via Kongma La high pass, 5535m.

Pokalde Peak can be easily climbed in half a day by a fit and acclimatised group with appropriate leadership. Although it is considered a simple trekking peak, sections of Pokalde are quite exposed so it shouldn't be attempted in poor weather. The base camp of Pokalde Peak, located just below the Kogma La pass overlooking a large lake below. The Kongma glacier is approximately a one hour climb above the base camp. The glacier, unfortunately, is receding in size. It is not uncommon for overnight temperatures at base camp to be minus 20 degrees or lower.

Note I: If you are traveling on a budget, and do not require five-star accommodation, we can provide you clean and comfortable hotels at more reasonable rates, which will reduce the total cost of the package.

Note II: Our previous experience shows that two nights and three days program is sufficient to climb Island Peak. In case you would like to stay more than two nights and three days in Island Peak Base Camp, you have to pay USD 110 Per Person / Per day, and you will get all the same services as the scheduled days.

Note III: Annapurna Foothills Treks provides all the equipment you will need to climb Island Peak and Lobuche Peak and Pokalde. We have a store in Chukung which supplies equipment from Camp and Black Diamond Company, which are high quality mountaineering suppliers. The only thing you need to bring is your own plastic boots to be sure you have a comfortable pair in the proper size. You may wish to hire some in Kathmandu.

Note IV: The following climbing equipment is available in Chukung.
